I'll
have a few pieces at the Headland's annual Close
Calls
exhibition.
Here's
the information for the show:
Date: January 13, 2008 to February 25, 2008 (Tuesday-Friday
and Sunday)
Time: 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Location: Headlands Center for the Arts
Opening
Reception: February 3, 2-5PM.
Close Calls:
2008 is an exhibition showcasing over 40 California visual
art applicants for Headlands Center for the Arts’ 2008
Artist in Residence Program, as well as finalists for the
Tournesol Award in Painting. The featured artists were all
extremely close calls in the highly competitive application
process.
Close Calls is another exciting venue for Headlands to recognize
emerging California visual artists through a curated selection
of their most recent work. Now in its sixth year, the show
has become a highly anticipated and well-attended addition
to Headlands programming. This exhibition will kick off programming
for 2008.

Sightlines
is here! The annual publication put out by the Visual
& Critical Studies Graduate Department at CCA (f.k.a-Visual
Criticism) is available for download here
(.pdf file). The publication was designed by Azusa Oda &
Nathan Davis and in print looks particularly amazing.
The
abstract on the site is a bit out of date--the title of my
essay in the publication is: "Do Pirates Dream of Pixelated
Sheep? Asian American Identities and Pirate Futurism in Contemporary
Art." The essay is also a truncated version of the thesis
so unfortunately doesn't include the chapter on Jen Liu's
work--as suggested by the description--only Stephanie's and
Glenn's.

It's
almost that Miami time of year again. This year Patricia will
be at the new Aqua
Art Miami - Wynwood location. Apparently this year they'll
have both their original site at the hotel as well as this
new Wynwood exhibition hall. I'll have some new pieces for
Patricia so check it out if you're in town.

An
unexpected gift came by snail mail today in the form of my
copy of BLK/MRKT Two, the thick hardcover publication
showcasing spreads of work from each of the artists featured
in BLK/MRKT Gallery's 2007 Artists' Annual. It's a nicely
done, 207-page volume that's a bit like an expanded exhibition
catalogue. The book should be available soon at your favorite
bookstore. Looks like Powell's
and Cody's
allow for pre/special orders.

Next

I'll have a new small piece in a one-night benefit exhibition
called "Who's Mr. Brown?" being held at 111 Minna
Gallery on August 10th. The event is being organized by Buck
Austin of Intersection
for the Arts and ALARM
Magazine. Proceeds will benefit New
Global Citizens. Artists have been asked to take inspiration
from the political subtext of Bob Marley's song "Mr.
Brown." So far the confirmed artists include: Binh Danh,
Brett Cook, Dennis McNulty, Ferris Plock, Jet Martinez, Julianna
Bright, Lily Lin, Micah Lebrun, Nome Edonna, Radioactive,
Romanowski, Tino Rodriguez, Sara Thustra, Christina Samala,
Anthony Grant & Becca Henry.
Should
be an interesting show and a good opportunity to get some
work from a mix of great artists. Cover for the event is $5
and all pieces will be going for $100 (all of which as mentioned
earlier will go to New Global Citizens).

Having
finished my thesis, graduated and installed a show in the
past few weeks, I feel like it's a good point to acknowledge
at least a few of the people who've given me a great deal
in the past few years. In no particular order:
Professors/mentors who have challenged, encouraged and provided
opportunities like Lydia Matthews, Kim Anno, Tina Takemoto,
Stephanie Syjuco, Mabel Wilson, Mary Snowden and Karen Fiss.
Particular thanks to Kim whose curatorial generosity has opened
doors, Lydia who has constantly provided an encouraging hand,
Tina who has been the advocate of so many and Stephanie who
sparked many of my writing interests and been a great studio
critic. My friend, teammate and sometimes collaborator Michele.
And of course our "dual" partner in crime, Lacey.
Patricia, my guide in a confusing new world. Susette and Sharon
who came in to help me refine my writing and thinking. Cohort
members and other classmates including Sarah, Estee, Katie,
Nate, Lori and Alecia. Other professors/advisors along the
way who provided a kick in the ass or steady hand when necessary
like Mark, Chris P., Chris F. and Kota. Stephanie and Jen
who were more than kind in offering up their thoughts so that
I might write about their work in my thesis. Glenn for the
last minute materials. Shana who has been an intellectual
and activist inspiration. And most of all Janice who has always
been eternally patient and supportive through this ongoing
process.

more
o.p.a.:
if
you make it through to the sfai mfa show at fort mason, be
sure to check out taylor vogland dreiling's distorted sculptures.
the furniture-gone-awry reveal her sense of humor, as well
as traces of their own making, whether materially or in hints
of the personal moments that inspired the pieces.
at
the cca mfa show (which wraps up today) other highlights i
didn't mention earlier include: david
gurman's beautifully executed and ambitious bell and seismic
monitoring mechanism. with the help of a team of scientists
and programmers, he's set the bell to ring out if seismic
activity spikes at a nevada nuclear testing range. i found
myself walking through the nave wondering if i would hear
that auditory evidence of distant military experimentation,
partially scared of the possibility but also secretly wanting
to hear what kind of sonic trace it would sound.
i'm
also facinated with nyeema
morgan's mix of drawings, convoluted board game and accompanying
brochure. the drawings hint at map-like systems, recipe instructions
or boardgame paths which have somehow been subverted, either
through erasure, removal or a nest of new vectors. the sculptural
piece manifests this idea through what seem to be pieces of
old board game playing surfaces twisted and built up into
a three-dimensional form. at first it called to mind the rather
convoluted attempts at three-dimensional chess or tic-tac-toe
game systems, but after a longer look, the game begins to
suggest either the impossibility of navigating some sinister
trap or the complex new formations which emerge as a group
might break from the bounds of their limited environs. the
brochure, tucked in a corner, explains in clearly illustrated
steps, the process of transforming black people into slaves--a
distilled willie lynch. these instructions frame the other
pieces, perhaps describing the system the drawings and sculpture
quietly resist and complicate.
i
also enjoyed patricia
esquivias's set of short, witty videos. she takes imagery
from both hollywood film and what seem to be personally filmed
videos and creates new, largely personally rooted narratives
through a voice over commentary track. she has a knack for
suggesting unexpected connections or possibilities in these
either banal or pirated visual images that seem to hint at
the everyday processes through which we consume, recontextualize
or subvert the pop culture visuals that bombard us constantly.

The
precise lineup is still being hammered out, but the CCA Visual
Criticism Graduate Symposium will be on March 31st, from 10
am - 6 pm. Everyone in my cohort will be presenting excerpts
from their theses. Topics range from visual arts to the politics
of transnational adoption. I'll post more details when the
schedule is figured out.
Also,
i f you're in Duesseldorf in the middle of next month, Patricia
will be bringing some of my work to the inaugural dc
duesseldorf art fair.
She's
also moving the gallery down the block, from 49 to 77 Geary.
There'll be a group show to open the new space in May.
I've
been messing a bit with some animation ideas. Nothing is ready
to show yet, but perhaps I'll post a short bit once I clean
things up. Here's a small still in the meantime:

Two
upcoming shows to start off the new year:
I'm
a part of this year's BLK/MRKT Gallery Artists' Annual
in Los Angeles (Culver City). Looks to be a packed show with
tons of art if last year's inaugural show is any indication.
The opening reception is this Saturday, January 13th, 6-10pm.
BMG
Artists' Annual
BLK/MRKT Gallery
6009 Washington Blvd.
Culver City, CA 90232
exhibition runs from Jan. 13-Feb. 17
I'm
also going to have work in a great show at the di Rosa Preserve
up in Napa called Graphic: New Bay Area Drawing.
The line-up is pretty amazing and has some of my favorite
Bay Area artists. The other artists are: Libby Black, John
Casey, Ala Ebtekar, David Huffman, Packard Jennings, Amy Rathbone,
Tucker Schwarz, Dean Smith, Taravat Talepasand, Josephine
Taylor and Canan Tolon.

I'll
also be on the artists' discussion panel moderated by curator
Michael Schwager entitled, Why Drawing? Why Now?
It takes place Thursday, February 15, 2007, 6:30pm. |
